Silver Beaver Awards will be presented at the council's Annual Meeting & Recognition Dinner on June 14.

The Silver Beaver Award is the highest award a local council can present to an adult volunteer of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is presented to those volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the Scouting program. Nominations are recommended by the local council and approved by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Eagle Scout John Thompson possesses an unparalleled commitment to improving his community and to strengthening the Scouting program.
He raised funds to maintain and enhance the Scouting program as co-chairman of three district Friends of Scouting campaigns.      He coached little league baseball, soccer, basketball and football. He is a member of the Southeast Missouri State University Cooper Dome Society and the Booster Club. He is a life member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association.
His recognitions include the Future Business Leaders of America Shadowing Award, the Jackson Booster Club’s Dennis Sievers Award, the Jackson Heritage Association’s Man of the Year Award, and the Jackson Chamber of Commerce’s R.A. Fluenwider Award for meritorious service to the community.
He was formerly chairman and currently a board member of the Jackson R-II Schools Foundation. He currently serves on the boards of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority, the Jackson Heritage Association, the SoutheastHealth Board of Trustees, and the Cape Girardeau Industrial Development Authority. He actively volunteers for the United Way, the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Heart Association and the Salvation Army.
He is an active member of the New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mo., and serves on the administrative board and as chairperson for finance.
